Life gets hectic. We are often pulled in a million directions throughout the day. We are overworked and under supported. Busyness becomes a lifestyle. We scramble from one thing to another, always feeling behind. A running list of what needs to be done racing through our minds. We feel out of control. Like we’ll never get it all done. Peace starts to feel like a mirage. We chase after it with all we have but somehow never quite arrive.

All this stress is toxic for our bodies, toxic for our minds. We lose our ability to stay present in our life. The stress starts to feel bigger than our ability to cope with it. We are exhausted, burned out. We need a break. But it can seem impossible to extricate ourselves from our responsibilities. It can feel like we have no choice, no control over the waves of chaos in our lives.

We know this is not how we want to live, not who we want to be. We may need support in sifting through the things we can let go of to make space for us to breathe. But even then, it isn’t easy. Sometimes there isn’t anything we can change. Sometimes we are in a difficult place and don’t have many options. Sometimes it’s harder than expected to shift our perspective, to begin to let go. It takes time.

Learning how to cultivate little moments of peace, little moments of mindfulness can begin to open the way forward. We don’t have to overhaul everything at once. We don’t have to dedicate more time than we have to practice self care. All we have to do is learn how to pause. By taking small, regular pauses throughout the day we can begin to reconnect to ourselves in the midst of all the busyness.

Mindfulness doesn’t have to look like long walks or deep meditation sessions. It doesn’t have to be done in a yoga studio or at a meditation retreat. We can connect with ourselves and the present moment anywhere. That’s the whole point. The present moment is always with us. We can connect with our breath, connect with our hearts throughout the day. That is the power of the pause. We learn to cultivate peace within the busyness.
